D-day is often used in military circles to designate the day on which a combat attacks or operation is to be initiated. It is often the day on which some important event will occur or has occurred. The best-known D-Day has been 6 June 1944, the day on which the invasion of Normandy began. It was the Allies’ effort to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II. The D-Day for the allied attack was originally set for June 5, 1944. However, bad weather and heavy seas made Eisenhower to delay it by one day. So June 6, 1944 came to be popularly referred to as D-Day. Several other operations and invasions had a designated D-Day. D-Day and H-Hour.

Traveler's Guide to D-Day and the Battle for Normandy
had already decided to go to Normandy when I purchased this book. But it was invaluable in helping me decide which places to see, since I knew my time would be limited. Each chapter consists of a narrative of part of the battle, then an accompanying suggested tour which touches on cities and places mentioned in that chapter. I ended up not following the plans exactly, but still basing my choices of places to go on the authors' narratives. -
